Despite Kenya’s progressive Constitution, many marginalized, underserved, and far-to-reach communities continue to face barriers to the enjoyment of their fundamental rights. Limited awareness of constitutional and human rights, low levels of civic literacy, inadequate access to legal information and justice mechanisms, weak accountability systems, and restricted opportunities for meaningful public participation prevent many citizens from claiming their rights, fulfilling their civic responsibilities, and influencing decisions that affect their lives. As a result, many rights violations go unreported, public institutions are not sufficiently held accountable, and inequalities continue to persist.
SODECA addresses these challenges by empowering rights-holders to understand, claim, exercise, defend, and enjoy their rights while strengthening the capacity of public institutions and other duty-bearers to uphold their constitutional and human rights obligations. Through human rights education and awareness, constitutional literacy, legal empowerment, community paralegal systems, advocacy, public participation, and social accountability initiatives, the programme promotes active citizenry, democratic governance, access to justice, and responsive public institutions.
